Shiner

Never a dull moment around here. Yesterday around 4pm I hear yelling and screaming.
I was trying to take a nap after a long day of Christmas shopping. Right now, its more like panic shopping. Anyway, Bernie runs upstairs and I asked him what was all the yelling and screaming going on down there.

Genevieve, as she normally does, was out playing with the boys. She can't be bothered with the girls and their make-up and Hannah Montana. She prefers tackle football and swinging down the neighbors zip-line in the backyard.

Yesterday was no exception. She was participating in an Ice War with the boys.
Throwing chunks of harden snow and ice at each other. She caught the business end of a ice ball in the eye. At first we thought it was just a garden-variety shiner. Put some ice on it and lay down.

On further inspection I noticed blood inside her eye and really intense swelling. I took her right away to her pediatrician who thought she was okay, but wanted us to see a specialist. Boy, I'm so glad we did!

Apparently, she has a very serious injury to her iris. Her eyes are so dark brown that even the doctor last night didn't notice the dark black pool of blood collecting in the bottom half of her iris. She also has a scratch on her eyeball under the lower lid and another next to her tear duct. She needs 3 different types of eye drops 4x a day. She has to lay in bed for 5 days. Oh this will be a trick. She is as bouncy as tigger. The also prescribed her valium. She threw up on the way home. She is sooo worried that her eyeball is going to fall out or she will go blind.

A did actually have to give her a valium this afternoon. She had herself worked up into such a state. One of the drops stings terribly, so she is not cooperating without a lot of patience on my part to get those drops in. She started hyperventilating, shaking all over. She is a nervous wreck over the whole thing.

Yesterday most of her anguish was for her friend Michael, the kid that lobbed the ice ball. Michael is the last kid on the block I'd suspect to do something like that. But...there it is. Kinda Karmatic...our dog nipped his sister a few weeks ago.
Michael was so upset, he begged Genevieve to tell us she ran into a tree instead of getting hit with the ice. He is obviously too afraid to tell his parents what happened, or maybe they just dont realize how severe the injury is.

The ophthalmologist she saw told me that normally he would send a person with this kind of injury to the hospital for 5 days, but insurance will no longer pay for this type of injury, so she is confined to bed at home. Just as well, it would be awful for her to spend Christmas in the hospital.

Wow...that looks like it hurt.

Liv took her first snowball to the face yesterday and she also has a shiner. But...luckily, it was a snowball, not an iceball....

The shiner will look so pretty with her red Christmas dress....

Hope G feels better soon. And I do not envy your part in all of this one bit....Liv would go ballistic if she had to have painful eyedrops several times a day.
